HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH'S CONVENT, DELHI

Rev. Fr. Antony Kannankeril OFM Cap, a Capuchin Priest from Kerala Vice Province Ponnurunni was the Manager of St. Joseph's Academy, Jwala Nagar, Delhi approached Our Superior General, Mother Georgia to send two Sisters to their School to as a helping hand to the institution. Mother General was happy to send Rev. Srs. Shantal and Theodosia for this Mission. Soon they joined on December 1977 to spread the Kingdom of Our Lord in the Northern Region. The work was much and as they found the need of more Sisters a few more Sisters joined to the community.

As the members increased in the house it was necessary to construct a Convent for the Sisters. Mother Georgia, then Superior General and Mother Audry, the Regional Superior approached the Archbishop Most Rev. Angelo Fernandes Archbishop of Delhi to consult of the matters. The Archbishop asked us to work among the poor in the resettlement area of shahdara and select a suitable place to construct a building for the purpose. After survey of few places Jyotinagar is chosen as our Centre. Even though it was very difficult to get the land here, with the help of a few gentlemen from the locality we managed to buy 800 sq. yds, in Jyotinagar near the main road side. The centre is very conveniently chosen as the bus stop is just in front of the building and shopping centre is not very far. Railway Station is close by. The School were the Sisters are serving is nearby. The resettlement area where the Social work is taken us is with in the reach.

As the Congregation was unable to meet the expense of the construction, we have applied to different agencies for donation to construct the building. Misserior, Missio Munich, Propaganda were too glad to come with their helping hands to satisfy our necessity. With a heartfelt thanks to the donors the foundation stone was laid on 17th March 1980, by Rt. Rev. Irineu dos Santos, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese in the presence of very Rev. Mother Georgia, the Mother General and Rev. Mother Pauline, the Regional Superior.

On 16th July 1981 the construction started and by December 1982 the ground floor which is meant for the Social Work is completed.

The Most Rev. Dr. Angelo Fernandes, the Arch Bishop of Delhi was kind enough to come and bless the building, on 15th January 1983. The Sisters moved in, from the School building to the Social Work Centre as the presence of the Sisters found necessary for the management of the Social work.

At present there is a tailoring Centre, Balwadi, Self employment Scheme, Savings Scheme, Help the Aged Project and Rehabilitation of the disabled.
